The death of the menu-bar app
Menu bars are full. So we built a native macOS screen-recorder that lives in the notch instead — open source, fast, and built on Flownotch. This field note expands on the practical decisions behind the work: what changed, why it mattered, and how teams can apply it without adding another app to their workflow.
The pattern we keep seeing is simple: people want fast access to context, but they do not want another dashboard. The notch works because it is already in the line of sight, small enough to stay calm, and close enough to become muscle memory.
For teams, the best rollout starts with one repeatable workflow. Pick a timer, launch room, support rotation, clipboard action, or AI summary. Make it useful in one glance, then publish it as a shared widget once the behavior is proven.
